Photovoltaic technology provides consumers with energy independence even in cases where the existing Electric Power Grid cannot supply them, whether for technical or financial reasons. Such P/V systems are called Off-grid.
In Off Grid Photovoltaic systems it is necessary to store the excess energy produced, in order for it to be available in cases where production is not sufficient to cover needs, usually because of the weather or at night. The storage of excess energy is achieved with the use of batteries. The amount of necessary energy to be stored is different in each case and depends on consumption, local conditions and required days of autonomy. Generally, the aim is to provide autonomy between 2 and 5 days.
In order to provide the batteries with the proper charging voltage, a charge controller is used, with parallel or in series connection with the Photovoltaic modules. The charge controller is also used to protect the batteries from overcharging and generally keeps charging at the desired levels.
